What is vinyasa yoga?

Vinyasa means breath-synchronized movement. The breath is the heart of this discipline and links asana to asana in a precise order. By synchronizing movement with breathing and practicing Mula and Uddiyana Bandhas (locks), an intense internal heat is produced. This heat purifies muscles and organs, expelling unwanted toxins as well as releasing beneficial hormones and minerals, which can nourish the body when the sweat is massaged back into the skin. Vinyasa greatly improves blood circulation.

What hours is the studio open?

Each studio opens 30 minutes before the first class begins and closes 20-30 minutes after the last class ends.

Do I need my own mat?

New York Yoga rents mats and towels at each studio for $4 (Hot classes). However, you are welcome to bring your own mat to class. You may also purchase mats and other yoga props in our boutique.

Do I need to be a member to take class?

Anyone may take class at either studio for the drop-in rate of $31. Although it is not necessary to reserve classes in advance, you may choose to do so through our online Webscheduler.

What should I wear to class?

Comfortable clothes that allow you to move and stretch easily. Stay away from anything too baggy, as you will probably find yourself upside down at some point. Shoes and socks are not worn in class. Although there is no standard yoga attire, we do offer a wide selection of yoga-appropriate workout clothes in our boutique.

Can people under 18 come to class?

Yogis of all ages are encouraged to attend class at New York Yoga. Minors must have a signed parent/guardian release waiver on file to take class unaccompanied. Children under 13 may not take regular yoga classes without a parent or guardian present.

What is the difference between classes and workshops?

Classes are held on a regular basis every month. They may be taken on a drop-in basis and are included in all memberships. Advance registration is not required and but may only be done through the Webscheduler. Classes are usually Vinyasa or Hot Vinyasa, and generally do not have a specific focus (with the exception of Restorative).

Workshops run in finite sessions or on a one-time basis and are not included in memberships (annual members receive 10% off). Advance registration is always required, and enrollment must be for an entire session. Workshops generally focus on more specific themes, such as Intro to Yoga or Prenatal Yoga.

Do I need to reserve classes in advance?

It is not necessary to reserve classes in advance. However, we do offer advance registration through the Webscheduler as a convenience. Please keep in mind that reservations are only held until 5 minutes before the start of class. After that time, reserved spaces will be given to standby students. In the event a class reaches maximum capacity, some students may be turned away. The best way to guarantee your spot in class is to arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. Please note that New York Yoga does not take reservations for regular classes by phone.

Do I need to reserve workshops in advance?

Workshops are held in finite sessions of either one class or a period of weeks. Classes within a workshop session generally meet on the same day and time once or twice per week. Enrollment must be for an entire session, and individual classes within a session may not be taken on a drop-in basis. (This way, you will be with the same classmates and teacher for an entire session.) Most workshops that are at least 4 weeks long allow one missed class within a session to be made up.

The webscheduler says the class I want is full. Can I still come to class?

Yes! Only two thirds of the spaces in a class are available to reserve online.

Please note that workshops, unlike classes, must be reserved in advance. All spaces in a workshop are available for online registration.

Can I buy a trial membership?

If you are not ready to commit to an annual unlimited yoga plan, please stop in or call to speak with a manager about options that would suit you best.

If you are new to the practice of yoga, we recommend the Intro to Yoga workshop, which comes with two months of unlimited membership for just $249.

Regularly scheduled classes may also be taken on a drop-in basis. While the drop-in rate for most classes is $31, certain classes are designated as "yogi's choice" and are offered as pay-what-you-can. Yogi's choice classes offer the same level of physical practice and instructor expertise as other classes on the schedule.
